"For all of the formal evolution that has occurred in my work during more than sixty years of painting, a few constants are discernible. First, there is a vision that has long been nourished by drawing from observation but put in the service of paintings which are almost entirely fictive invention. Also, there is the predilection I have for working either in very large sizes, often in multi paneled pieces, or on canvases as small as ten inches square.

I’ve wanted all my work to be both looked at, in terms of an active painterly surface, and simultaneously into, as windows through which a world is visible. I feel that coaxing the highest degree of tension between these seemingly contradictory approaches accounts for much of the excitement in the game for me."

                                                      JAMES MCGARRELL.
